Ava DuVernay Continues to Break Boundaries as First Female of Color to Direct a $100 Million Movie
Selma director Ava DuVernay is passing a major milestone in Hollywood.
According to
The Los Angeles Times, DuVernay's upcoming Disney movie,
A Wrinkle in Time, has a budget upwards of $100 million, which would make her the first female director of color to helm a movie with such a hefty price tag.
What's more, she is just the third woman to do so. Oscar winner Kathrym Bigelow (K-19: The Widowmaker) and Patty Jenkins, whose Wonder Womanfilm is in post-production, are the only other members of this elite club.
A Wrinkle in Time, starring Oprah Winfrey is due out next year. The film is an adaptation of the 1963 Madeleine L'Engle science fantasy novel which follows a young girl whose scientist father goes missing after working on a mysterious project for the government.
The Golden Globe-nominated director is also collaborating with Winfrey on the OWN drama, Queen Sugar. Last month, DuVernay gushed to ET about working with the media mogul.
"Everyone knows of her warmth and her generosity through The Oprah Show," DuVernay told ET. "I feel like I get my own Oprah Show every time when I call her."
